Setting up a VPN on Android TV and Apple TV
A television is the most awkward device to configure — typing a long link with a remote is painful. The good news is that you do not have to: it all goes through a QR code shown on a phone.
What you need
A television running Android TV (Sony, Philips, Xiaomi, most recent sets) or an Apple TV. A phone with your account open — it is only there to display the QR code. And an active subscription: without one the servers appear in the list but the connection fails authentication. Sets running Tizen (Samsung) or webOS (LG) will not work — there is no app for them, and neither system offers a supported way to install a VPN.
Installing the app
On Android TV open Google Play on the television itself and search for INCY. Where Play is unavailable the app can be sideloaded from an APK, but that needs a file manager and installation from unknown sources enabled, which is considerably more work. On Apple TV the app is in the App Store, found the same way as on an iPhone. Installation takes under a minute and the app needs no account of its own — it is free and works with any subscription.
Adding the subscription by QR
In the app on the television choose to add a subscription and pick the QR option — either the camera starts or a field for the code appears. Now open your account on your phone, press QR code, and hold the phone screen up to the television. The app reads the link and pulls in every server by itself. One detail: the QR dialog has a switch — pick the option for any app, which carries the plain link and is read everywhere.
When there is no camera
Some televisions have no camera and cannot scan a QR code at all. Then the link has to be typed with the remote — tedious, but only once. Copy it in your account with the Subscription URL button and send it to yourself by whatever opens on the television: email, a messenger, a note in the cloud. From there it can be copied and pasted into the app rather than typed. Android TV also supports keyboard apps that turn a phone into a remote with proper text entry.
Connecting automatically
Once it is set up, turn on auto-connect in the app — the tunnel then comes up by itself when the television does, with no remote involved. That matters more than it sounds: a television is usually shared, and a manual connection step becomes a source of questions. The server list refreshes itself from the subscription, so nothing has to be reconfigured when new countries appear.
